This is the one I recommend to almost everyone before they arrive, and it’s not just the food — it’s the arrival. You park at the top of a wooded ravine in Capitola and ride a small cable car down through the trees to the restaurant, which sits creekside in terraced gardens strung with lights. It’s been open since 1947 and still feels like a genuine occasion rather than a tourist stop. The menu leans classic California steakhouse — good seafood, a solid wine list, a fireplace lounge if you’re just there for a drink and the view. Book ahead for a window or garden table, especially on weekends in summer. It’s a fifteen-minute drive from the house, easy to pair with a walk along Capitola’s esplanade beforehand while you wait for your table. Best at dusk, when the lights come up in the garden and the creek is just visible below. It’s a splurge night rather than a regular one, but it’s the dinner people talk about after they’ve gone home — ask me and I’ll tell you which table to request.
