When the marine layer rolls in and doesn’t burn off, or an actual rainy day catches you mid-vacation, this is where we send people. It’s about forty minutes south on Highway 1, and it’s genuinely one of the best aquariums in the world — not a rainy-day consolation prize. The three-story kelp forest tank is the centerpiece, tall enough that you look straight up through swaying kelp at fish circling overhead, but the open-sea tank with tuna and turtles and the hands-on tide pool exhibit are just as good for keeping kids engaged for hours. It sits right on Cannery Row, so lunch and a walk along the water afterward is an easy add-on once the weather clears. Buy timed tickets online before you go — it does sell out, especially on actual rainy days when everyone else has the same idea. Go early if you can; the crowds build steadily through the afternoon. It’s a full half-day easily, longer if you let the otter feedings and dive shows pull you in, which they will.
