This is where I tell people to stop on the way to the beach, not on the way back. Gayle’s has been a Capitola institution since the 1980s — part bakery, part rotisserie counter, part full deli — and the case up front is genuinely overwhelming in the best way: croissants, layer cakes, cookies the size of your hand, alongside a hot food counter doing rotisserie chicken, tri-tip, and fresh sandwiches built to order. It’s counter service, so don’t expect a sit-down meal, but there’s outdoor seating if you want to eat there, or you can grab everything to go and picnic on the sand back at the house. Mornings get busy with the coffee-and-pastry crowd, so if you want a quieter visit, go mid-morning after the initial rush or swing by around lunch for the hot counter. It’s an easy five-minute stop that turns into twenty once you see the case. Whatever you do, don’t skip the baked goods for the deli alone — this is one of the rare places that’s genuinely excellent at both.
